While all the ramifications of the recent passage of Prop 19 have yet to sorted out, it’s clear that homeowners over 55, severely disabled residents and those whose properties were damaged by wildfires or contamination should see benefits.
For instance, homeowners over 55 will be able to move anywhere in California without seeing significant property tax hikes if they buy a property of equal or lesser value.
Those who will probably not benefit are the inheritors of property who will now be required to pay taxes based on the current market value and not when the property was originally purchased.
