The Travelers Insurance Company recently released a report citing the most common and costliest claims made by US homeowners from 2009 through 2015. Topping the list was exterior wind damage (25 percent) followed by non-weather related water damage (19 percent), hail (15 percent) weather-related water damage (11 percent) and theft 6 percent).
Not surprisingly, fire produces the most expensive claims. According to the report, fire was most often caused by electrical problems, failing (or misused) appliances or cooking accidents.
